Kate Semple | Hand building Clay pots | Saturday 22nd June

£135.00

10am - 4pm

Exploring handbuilding with Clay:

The day will begin with Kate guiding you through her favourite handbuilding techniques and demonstrating how to manipulate and play with clay. We will then spend time drawing up ideas of how you can implement these before Kate show’s you how to create a vessel. This could be a group of smaller builds creating a coffee set or perhaps a larger sculptural vase? The choice is yours.

We will break for lunch over in the Walled Garden and potting sheds before coming back over to the Joiner’s shop to finish off our clay creations.

There will be books to inspire & plenty of ideas and guidance from Kate along the way

Your finished creations will be fired and posted to your chosen address.

No experience is necassary, just an open mind and a desire to get your hands on some clay and see what happens.

Closest Train stations Darlington, Northallerton, Yarm. (Taxi or pick ups can be arranged).

All about Kate: “I create one-off sculptural pieces using the traditional handbuilding methods of slab, pinch, and coil. I believe and encourage myself to not look too much at how others work when relating to my practice; but rather look within, to instinct and gut. This conjures a far more personal and unique outcome which is the key.

I work from my home studio in York and began handbuilding vessels at home during the pandemic, and in spring 2022 took part in my first York Open Studios where I sold my body of work from this time. Since then I have continued to build vessels with paper and clay and consequently bought a kiln.

Recently, I ran a virtual recycled paper vessel workshop for Toast, sharing my process and love of creating something beautiful from the discarded. I’m interested in the relationship between the two materials whilst responding to the contrast.”
